It’s the second week of school at Keystone Academy and students, faculty, and staff are all well back in action! This week, parents from the community have also gone “back to school”, joining short gatherings and discussions on the learning activities that take place in and outside of the Keystone classroom.

The initial set of “Back to School” Nights began on August 26 and welcomed parents of students from Foundation to Grade 10. The sessions informed parents of important school events such as the Outdoor Education Program (OEP), as well as provided a forum for them and their children’s advisors to discuss learning goals.

Several faculty, staff, and student leaders also set up information tables to help parents learn more about the school curriculum; understand the value of school activities from students’ point of view; and connect with key people from various school departments including the Center for Student Development (CSD), Information and Educational Technology, and the Keystone Libraries.

Meanwhile, more than 500 parents also attended the first open meeting of the Keystone Academy PTA (KAPTA) this academic year on August 27 at the Performing Arts Center (PAC). The fifth KAPTA committee chairs opened the general assembly with a talk about their initiatives that promote better communication and cooperation between parents and the school.

At the assembly, Head of School Malcolm McKenzie, Associate Head of School and Dean of Curriculum Lili Jia, and new Dean of Faculty Paulina Aguilera spoke to parents about the Academy’s general framework for teacher professional growth and evaluation. McKenzie also gave a short statement on the school’s perspectives on the academic performance of its first two graduating cohorts. Head of High School Diana Martelly, Assistant Head of High School IBDP Coordinator Rick Spadafora, and Co-Directors of College Counseling Amanda Yan and Percy Jiang joined him in the following Q&A session with parents. The “Back to School” Night sessions conclude on September 3 (Tuesday) with the two IBDP years, Grades 11 and 12.
