The Middle School program, grades 6-9, at Keystone Academy is exciting, challenging and full of new academic opportunities for our students. Keystone Academy offers a model of integrated education that develops the foundations for success in high school and college. Learning in the middle school is engaging and demanding; students engage with universal concepts, learn through inquiry, challenge conventional approaches, cultivate new forms of knowledge, and master the skills that lead to breakthroughs in their own knowledge.
The Middle School continues the dual-language immersion program started in the Primary School. By employing a progressive model of English language acquisition, affirmed by research and effective practice, students build true linguistic competency and cultural understanding in Chinese and English. Students use both languages throughout the school day in all their activities. Students from immersion programs, such as ours, demonstrate a high correlation between complex thinking skills and advanced linguistic abilities.
Small class sizes of around 15 allow students to explore a wide range of academic disciplines in depth. The middle school curriculum is a holistic program designed to promote students’ intellectual development as well as their emotional, social and physical development. All students are required to attend all 8 courses from grade 6-10. In order to be eligible for a Keystone IB MYP Certificate, grade 10 students must meet an overall minimum standard of the requirements of the Academy, pass the Personal Project and meet the requirements of Service as Action.
The courses offered in each grade in middle school are:
• Language and Literature in English and/or Chinese
• Language Acquisition in English or Chinese
• Individuals and Societies (World Civilizations and Chinese Civilizations)
• Sciences (Integrated modules in Biology, Chemistry and Physics)
• Mathematics (Standard and Extended levels in grade 9 and 10)
• Arts (Drama, Music, Visual Arts) & (Chinese Painting or Chinese Dance or Chinese Music)
• Physical and Health Education (Practical and Theory and Wushu)
• Design (Digital and Product)
The strength of the Keystone program is the consistent and well-organized emphasis on rigorous student learning in the context of both Chinese and international perspectives. Students have many occasions to develop their skills in research, communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and self-management; all crucial ingredients of success for the rigors of high school, the IBDP academic program, university and beyond.
